Saloon Artist Jill DeGroff paints bartenders, musicians, writers, artists, gypsies,and other unusual characters from bars around the world. Inspired by the dark world of Otto Dix's Weimar Republic and Al Hirschfeld's 1932 Speakeasy sketchbook, Jill set out to discover the greatest saloons of this century and document some of the most interesting characters who inhabit them. She has now drawn over 600 caricatures. Her book, Lush Life, Portraits from the Bar is a unique anthology that captures the heart and soul of the bar through a spectrum of characters, each of whom share a story, a drink, and a splash of bar room wisdom. |
